Knowing your swath means keeping your customers, it's that simple.

Learn more about swath measuring here:

    #happycustomer #protips #americandronePSA: (TL/DR) Do I really need to buy a swath measuring instrument when I buy a drone?

Committing to measuring your swath as part of making professional applications is not just a best practice, it should be considered standard practice. This is simple science and old-fashioned professionalism. You'll notice no product mentions in this post.

Swath measurement has been standard practice in the manned aerial community for decades, and we've spent millions of public dollars on the USDA nozzle and drift models (google the phone app) so that those applicators can make good choices. To date, drone applicators have no such benefit. There is some catching up to do in this aspect. So you'll have to test.

We believe every professional applicator should own and use some method of swathing on a regular basis. Why? A full continuous swath reading (not one card per meter, continuous) can show not only swath quality, but also it can show equipment failures like slowing motors or pumps, or cracked and spewing fittings BEFORE they are catastrophic and visible to the operator. A physical measurement at the beginning of the job is also a great value-add and validation to a customer in addition to your as-applied maps. Everyone's seen photos of striped fields, show your customers that you know how not to stripe with real DATA.

We get it, the startup costs add up. Here’s some economic reasons why you SHOULDNT skip the swath measurement tool and instead get your swath answers from Facebook:

The price of even the most expensive measurement tools is about the same cost as having to respray a decent sized field or two. (especially if you have to buy the chemicals). It can be a fraction of the cost of a drift claim. If you don’t know with confidence what your swath is, (including wind shift) these things will eventually happen to you.

For private farmer end users who spray their own land only and maybe don’t care about that, consider that striping fields could easily cost 20-30% yield reductions, or more in a high disease pressure year. It doesn't take many acres of that kind of productivity loss to justify the swath measurement tool and the time to use it.

Doing it right is always the cheapest and most profitable path. You paid the money for the chemicals and drone, get the full benefit of the tools. Learn how to spray like you mean it.

    Starting with good habits
Purchasing a Swath Measurement System at the time you purchase your drone is a great opportunity to learn what your drone REALLY does, in the conditions that you spray in, while you are getting your licensing and other affairs in order. Swathing your drone and understanding how it acts BEFORE you take money for a spray application is a best practice.... and common sense. It's not fair to make your customers the guinea pigs!

If you spend any time on the social forums, you’ll see lots of folks making swath recommendations. You also see a lot of photos of striped fields. You NEVER read recommendations for swath offset due to wind, but that's very real. How many applicators even know?

When we do sprayer rodeos on breezy days, a good portion of applicators miss the swath, sometimes entirely! Following those social post recommendations is spraying and praying. It is definitely not something professional applicators should do. Don’t fall for the easy path because it’s cheap. It could be the most expensive decision you make.

Food for thought. Of course, we make a swath measurement tool, and we think its a pretty good one, as does the gross majority of the research community. if what you read here intrigues you, talk to your dealer or click over to our site. Or visit us in booth 332 at the SDEUC, WSSA in Raleigh, or Commodity Classic. Thanks for reading!
